Many children in our area qualify for free or reduced lunches during the school year. In many larger cities, school cafeterias are able to remain open during the summer break so these children can still have access to nutritional food throughout the summer. Unfortunately, our local schools are unable to do so.
Two years ago, Cup of Grace began filling this need by providing free lunches to children on Saturdays. The lunches typically consist of a sandwich, snack and a drink. In addition, the children get a take-home bag with several items such as individual packs of soup, cereal or other similar items to have during the week. We have also coordinated with our public library to provide sack lunches for their children’s reading program. We have served an average of 500 meals per year.
This year we anticipate serving roughly 775 lunches and providing 450 take-home bags. We accept donations of sealed/prepacked food or donations toward purchasing the necessary supplies.
Lunches will be served in the Spirit Lake Big Park from 11:30-1:30 starting the first Saturday of summer vacation for Lakeland School District until school starts back up in the fall. Lunches will also be provided after the Thursday children’s reading program at the Spirit Lake Library.
